3 Sleep Tips for Newborn Baby and New Mom

If you thought that sleep was a challenge during pregnancy, just wait until your bundle of joy has kept you up for three nights straight. As an experienced labor and delivery nurse told me: "Be prepared for the newborn high to wear off".  Sure enough, the reality of newborn baby's distressing cries at 2:00 am tends to disrupt a once blissful slumber.  My advice? Relax, and don't be too hard on yourself. Yes, life will change, priorities shift and you will survive.  In retrospect, here are a few tips that helped the new baby journey run a little smoother, with a good night's sleep at the end of the road.

Sleep Tips for New Mom
  • Take friends and family up on their offers of help-without feeling guilty!
  • Sleep when baby sleeps, especially with brand new babies that are far too young for routines quite yet
  • Prepare for long nights by going to bed an hour earlier and make midnight feedings bearable with treats for you. Make sure you empty that bladder before you retrieve junior. The more comfortable Mom is, the less stress baby will feel and the faster everyone is back to sleep
Sleep Tips for Newborn Baby
  • Don't over stimulate before bedtime, this might seem obvious but the sooner you start setting baby up for a consistent bed time and start practicing relaxing activities beforehand, the better
  • Do Whatever works, don't stress out if baby doesn't follow the exact same sleep patterns described in an article you read. If you over think and analyze everything, you won't have time to enjoy the unique qualities of your baby. *Be sure to check with your doctor if you have medical concerns.
  • Motion and soft music, again, whatever works for you and baby, but try to keep it simple. There are so many gadgets out there it is hard to know what will really help calm your baby. An infant swing that rocked and played lullabies and soothing sounds was a savior in our house. Don't ever underestimate the effectiveness of a rocking chair and an off key Rock-a-bye-baby though, chances are your newborn will demand an encore.

Pasta

Authored by Greg Fletcher
One of my favorite things to watch on cable tv is cooking shows. I have been watching them every night to get ideas for what to cook for dinner. The other night I made Giada's Manicotti with Parmesan cheese and it was so good! Pasta is my favorite thing to eat, so I think I am going to be making a lot of her recipes! My family is pretty thrilled with my new hobby. There was a time when I was considering going to culinary school, but now I am just thinking I can learn everything I need to from the Food Network! Cooking helps me get into a zone where I can forget about everything from my day and just focus on something else. Some people get the same effect from exercising, but I could never imagine running for fun. I much rather stir a bowl of something yummy and then get to enjoy eating it and watching my family enjoy eating it also! Since I started cooking these meals, we have sat down and had dinner together every night of the week. It is the best family time!

8 Natural Sleep Aids

If sleep has somehow made its way to the bottom of your priorities, you're not alone. Although the National Sleep Foundation recommends getting seven to nine hours of sleep a night, recent research reflects that an average American logs just over six hours!. Blame crazy schedules and, of course, sleeping woes. Before you rush to the drugstore to buy an over-the-counter (OTC) sleep medication, try one of the following natural sleep remedies. "These are safer and have fewer side effects than most OTC PM-type sleep aids says Jacob Teitelbaum, MD, author of From Fatigued to Fantastic and medical director of the national Fibromyalgia and Fatigue Centers. Many of these can not only help you fall asleep and stay asleep, but they may also promote muscle relaxation.

Magnesium and calcium

Magnesium and calcium are both sleep boosters, and when taken together, they become even more effective. Plus, by taking magnesium, you cancel out any potential heart problems that might arise from taking calcium alone. Take 200 milligrams of magnesium—lower the dose if it causes diarrhea—and 600 milligrams of calcium each night.

Wild lettuce

If you've suffered anxiety, headaches, or muscle or joint pain, you might already be familiar with wild lettuce. It's also effective at calming restlessness and reducing anxiety—and may even quell restless legs syndrome. When using a wild-lettuce supplement, take 30 to 120 milligrams before bed.

Hops

Beer fans will no doubt be familiar with the calming effect of hops, the female flowers used in beer making. For sleep purposes, though, this extract has been widely used as a mild sedative for anxiety and insomnia. Take 30 to 120 milligrams before climbing under the covers.

Aromatherapy

Lavender is the trick here, as studies have proven that it aids in sleep. It's also a cheap, nontoxic way to slip into a peaceful slumber. Find a spray with real lavender and spritz it on your pillow before bedtime. Or buy a lavender-filled pillow. There are many ways to wake up feeling beautiful!

Melatonin

Melatonin is the hormone that controls sleep, so it's no wonder that it naturally induces sleep. Although some experts recommend taking higher doses, studies show that lower doses are more effective. Plus, there's concern that too-high doses could cause toxicity as well as raise the risk of depression or infertility. Take 0.3 to 0.5 milligrams before bed.

Yoga or meditation

Choose gentle yoga or stretching, not vigorous power or ashtanga yoga, which could energize you instead. Try easy yoga stretches in bed followed by simple meditation. Close your eyes and, for 5 to 10 minutes, pay attention to nothing but your breathing.

L-theanine

This amino acid comes from green tea and not only helps maintain a calm alertness during the day but also a deeper sleep at night. However, green tea doesn't contain enough L-theanine to significantly boost your REM cycles. Besides, you might then wake up to go to the bathroom. Instead, buy a brand called Suntheanine, which is pure L-theanine. (Other brands have inactive forms of theanine that block the effectiveness.) Take 50 to 200 milligrams at bedtime.

Valerian

Valerian is one of the most common sleep remedies for insomnia. Numerous studies have found that valerian improves deep sleep, speed of falling asleep, and overall quality of sleep. However, it's most effective when used over a longer period of time. One caveat? About 10% of the people who use it actually feel energized, which may keep them awake. If that happens to you, take valerian during the day. Otherwise, take 200 to 800 milligrams before bed.

Mom helped then left

Guest written by our friend Sergio Chaney
My mom helped me move in all my stuff last month to my new apartment and I have to admit that when she left I cried. Just watching her drive away was the saddest thing in the world – all of a sudden I was totally alone in this big city and didn’t know a soul. It was a good thing I’d gotten directv georgetownbecause that TV kept me company day and night for the last three weeks. I’m finally starting to make some friends at my new job but even still it’s not like my social calendar is jam packed. I love though that after I get off work and go for a run if I don’t have anything to do I just get online and surf the web while watching old episodes of Friends or Sex and the City on the TV set. It’s really comforting to have the extra noise and the drone of the TV even helps me fall asleep at night, if you can believe it! What a life.

Cooking Shows

Thanks for the article from Major Paul
I am so excited about my new purchase! After being a poor college student for four years and not having cable, I went on tvbydirect.com and got a great deal. I knew this would be my first purchase after getting a job. I am most excited about watching all the cooking shows. That is how unwind at night. I love to try a new recipe and I get most of mine from FoodNetwork.com. Now, I will be able to watch the episode and make that meal the next night for dinner! My boyfriend will be seriously happy about this investment because it will mean some really good meals for him. My favorite show is Everyday Italian. Probably because I love any sort of pasta dish. Giada makes the most delicious meals and most of them are easy enough for me to make. I also love how all the food looks on the Food Network. It is all so pretty and bright looking. Another favorite of mine is 30 minute meals. Those meals are very easy, which is good after a long day at work.

Blucig: The electronic cigarette to smoke for your health

There is not a lack of health problems today that are associated with cigarette smoking so it is really no surprise that several cities nearby have actually banned cigarette smoking altogether. Fortunately the percentage of Americans that smoke has decreased substantially in the past few decades but what about those that still enjoy a cigarette every once in a while and are are otherwise considered health conscious? Is there a compromise that would allow one to inhale fumes from a cigarette-like device, referred to as an ecig or Blucig and not jeopardize the health of everyone nearby?

Maybe this electronic cigarette called Blu can accomplish both:
  • No Tar, No Tobacco, No Ash, No Smell
  • No second hand smoke only water vapor
  • Smoke anywhere, Bars, Airports, Offices
  • Over 50% cheaper than buying cigarettes
  • More socially acceptable than cigarettes
With the cost of cigarettes these days, to your bank account and to your health, Blu is an essential alternative for anyone who continues to smoke or knows someone who does. With a 1 year warranty and money back within 30 days, the only risk would be not trying this product! Here's to your health!

College Apartment

Written by my friend Teodoro Martin
I finally was able to get my own apartment off campus and by myself. Finding a one-bedroom apartment off campus was one of the hardest jobs of my life. I was starting to believe that they didn’t make one-bedroom apartments anymore but I found a notification in the newspaper just last week that said there was a one-bedroom apartment available just four miles away from campus and I jumped on it as fast as I could. I didn’t even expect the apartment to be so cheap, but thankfully it was because now I have some extra money to spend on procuring some furniture and getting a TV. My mom recently referred me to HD Tv sports new york and told me that I should try out satellite TV for awhile. Thanks to my mom, I’m going to be able to have all my friends over to watch all the programs that the other girls don’t get in the dorms. Now that my TV situation is figured out I need to go online and see if I can buy a reasonably priced couch.

First Child

Thanks for the post, Kathy Shelton
When I found out I was pregnant with my first child I was pretty Panicked. My husband and I were exactly trying, so I wasn’t prepared to become a mom just quite yet. I immediately got on our Internet from www.WirelessInternet.net and started doing research about exactly what to expect when you're expecting, and it turns out there's a wealth of information online just for women like me. I actually found a chat room for other first-time moms, which was really helpful for me since I wasn't able to talk through some of my concerns with people in the same boat. I also learned a lot about prenatal care, finding a pediatrician, as well as what to expect during the first year of motherhood. I feel much better now about the impending birth, and my husband and I can't wait to welcome our son into the world in just a few short months. Now I've just got to finish that nursery so he has somewhere to sleep when we bring him home from the hospital!

Easy DIY salsa dip for my friends and I

Guest post written by Carrie Holiday

Once I found out when the reunions for the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills were going to be, I decided to invite some of my friends over who also love the show so that we could watch it together. We actually watch some other reality TV things like that together, like Jersey Shore premieres and finales.
I thought that I would come up with some kind of snack for us to eat while we watch the reunion show, so I went online to find an easy recipe. While i was online looking for that, I came across the website CLEARWIREINTERNET.COM and after I looked through it a little bit, I decided to sign up for internet service through it for my house.
I settled ! on making some salsa because I knew that would be pretty easy with my food processor. Salsa and tortilla chips is such a great snack anyway and everyone was really impressed that I made the salsa. They couldn't even tell! We’re also going to have a get-together for the second part of the reunion!
